Dreamsea Surf Camp in Portugal, shot on film
We spent the last week of June living in the tent in Dreamsea surf camp in Portugal. At least once a year, my boyfriend and I when choosing surfing destination, go to surf camp: often we travel to the ocean only 2 of us, so the camp always offers a great balance for being on our own and among people at the same time. Dreamsea in Portugal is a little different from the camps we went before cause it is a tent camp; so for 7 days and nights we lived in a tent by the ocean, and it was awesome!

Dreamsea в Португалии отличается от предыдущих лагерей тем, что это палаточный лагерь, все 7 дней и ночей мы жили в палатке на берегу океана, и это было прекрасно!
In fact, there already a handful of Dreamsea camps and guest houses around the world: a few years ago, entrepreneurs from Spain opened their first Dreamsea surf camp in the south-west of France, after which they do not stop to open new spots around the world: in addition to France, there are Dreamsea camps in Spain, Portugal, Nicaragua, Sri Lanka, Bali … (maybe somewhere else, but it's better to check on their website). Each camp, due to its geographic location, is slightly different, but as far as I understood, managers and instructors travel between different camps, and spend one season, for example, in Portugal, the other, let's say in Nicaragua. But I will tell you about the camp in Portugal, the only one I've been to so far.
На самом деле, лагерей и guest houses Dreamsea уже несколько по всему миру: ребята из Испании несколько лет назад открыли свой первый палаточный лагерь Dreamsea на юго-западе Франции, после чего не останавливаются открывать новые споты по всему миру: кроме Франции, лагеря Dreamsea есть в Испании, Португалии, Никарагуа, Шри-Ланке, Бали... (возможно еще где-то, но лучше проверить на их сайте). Каждый лагерь, в силу своего географического положения, немного разный, но насколько я поняла, менеджеры и инструкторы путешествуют между разными лагерями, и один сезон проводят, например, в Португалии, другой, скажем в Никарагуа. Но я расскажу именно про лагерь в Португалии.
Check-in at Dreamsea takes place on Saturdays for a minimum period of 1 week. You can get from Lisbon airport either by direct transfer from the camp (it costs 35 euros per person, it takes about 2 hours drive), or by train to Grandola station (the ticket from Lisbon to Grandola is about 15 euros) and then by transfer from the camp (5 euros ). The camp is part of the Camping Galé (Parque de Campismo Praia da Galé), which is located in an incredibly beautiful place on the ocean. To be honest, before the trip we didn’t even see what the area looked like, so the absolutely cosmic, Martian landscape that opened up to us as soon as we arrived at the camp just knocked us down: a white beach surrounded by those red sand formations (something like very dense sand dunes), clean and calm. After returning to Paris, I was looking for information about this beach, but neither the Internet nor the guidebooks have much photos or information; although Praia da Galé turned out to be one of the most beautiful beaches in Portugal for me.

Если честно, перед поездкой мы даже не посмотрели, как выглядит пляж, поэтому абсолютно космический, марсианский пейзаж, который нам открылся, как только мы прибыли в лагерь просто сбил нас с ног: белоснежный пляж, окруженный рыжими и красными песочными образованиями (что-то вроде очень плотных песочных дюн), чистый и спокойный. Уже после возвращения в Париж я искала информацию про этот пляж, но ни в интернете ни в путеводителях особо нет ни фотографий, ни информации, хотя Praia da Galé оказался одним из самых красивых пляжей в Португалии для меня.
We paid 870 euros per week in the camp for two, this price includes the transfer from / to the airport of Lisbon (to be booked separately), 3 meals per day, all sorts of camp activities and accommodation in a triple tent (we were left just 2 of us in a tent without extra charge), tent very spacious and comfortable - it has wooden flooring, a real mattress (not inflatable one), electricity. There are more expensive options like Glamping (double tent with a bed, chairs, a chest of drawers, etc.) and Glamping Plus (I did not see what was there in the tents, probably a grand luxury😅, but the guests of Glamping Plus have a separate dining room and toilets). By the way, about the toilets, this is probably the one of the only cons of the camp: the toilets are in common of the whole camping (out of the Dreamsea area) and are located about 100 m from Dreamsea. They are super clean, with hot water any time of the day, and we quickly get used to walk 5 mins everytime the things need to be done. But at night it is not very convenient.
Вместе с трансфером из/в аэропорт Лисабона мы заплатили 870 евро за неделю в лагере за двоих, в эту стоимость входит 3-х разовое питание, всякие лагерные активности и проживание в трехместной палатке (нас оставили в палатке вдвоем без доп. оплаты), палатка очень просторная и комфортная - я деревянным полом, матрасом (не надувным), электричеством. Есть более дорогие опции Glamping (двухместные палатка с кроватью, стульями, комодом и проч) и Glamping Plus (я не видела, что там в палатках, наверное космос, но у гостей Glamping Plus отдельная столовая и туалеты). Кстати, про туалеты, это пожалуй единственным минус: туалеты общие для всего кемпинга и находятся примерно в 100 м от Dreamsea. Они супер чистые, с горячей водой, и быстро привыкаешь к марш-броскам по делам, но вот ночью это не очень удобно.
The food was also great, I mean REALLY good! Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included in the price and they are super tasty and nutritious, there are always vegan and vegetarian options besides the classic menu. At breakfast, fruit, cereal, granola, sandwiches; at lunch super salads and there was a different cuisine for dinner every night - Italian, Mexican, Middle East, Asian. The camp has its own bar, where they make smoothies, cocktails but also wine, beer and alcohol-free beverages.
Еда, кстати, тоже была отличная! Завтраки, обеды и ужины включены в стоимость и они супер вкусные и питательные, всегда есть веган и вегетарианские опции, помимо классического меню. На завтрак фрукты, хлопья, гранола, сендвичи; в обед супер питательные салад и на ужин каждый вечер разная кухня - итальянская, мексиканская, ближний восток, азиатская. В лагере есть свой бар, где делают смузи и коктейли.
When booking your spot in the camp, you can take an option with surfing lessons and without, in both cases you have unlimited use of materials (wetsuit and board). We had an option without lessons, since my bf surfs well, and I already have base notion and feeling like I do not need an instructor (but practicepracticepractice). Surfing conditions depend on the weather and usually you can surf once or twice per day (each session lasts up to 3h). The rest of the time you are free to do whatever you like: a lot of joint activities are going on in the camp (yoga, weekly Lisbon trip, farmers market shopping, ping-pong tournaments, etc.) or you can just hang out on the beach, sleep, read, balance board or skate. We actually never went out from the camp, the whole week we were hanging out in common spaces, beach or woods of the camp: it was so good to just do nothing, lie in a hammock, read a book, fall asleep from time to time, enjoy the mind blowing sunsets every evening.
After dark there was always something to do: they organize contests and activities (like in kids summer camps, but with alcohol😜 music, dancing and singing. However, there is a curfew in camping that everyone should respect: silence hours from 00:00 to 06:00. Therefore, after 23:30, those who wanted to continue to party went down to the beach bar, those who were tired went to sleep.
При брони лагеря можно взять опцию с уроками серфинга и без, в обоих случаях можно безлимитно пользоваться всеми материалами (гидрокостюмом и доской). Мы брали без уроков, так как Леша серфит хорошо, а у меня уже приличная база, что я не нуждаюсь в инструкторе. Серфинг, понятное дело, зависит от погоды и может быть 1 или 2 раза в день. В остальное время в лагере проходят куча совместных активностей (йога, поездка в Лисабон, или на фермерский рынок, забеги, турниры в пинг-понг и проч) или можно просто тусить на пляже, спать, читать, зависать на баланс борде или кататься на скейте. На самом деле, мы даже никуда не хотели выходить из лагеря: было настолько хорошо просто ничего не делать, лежать в гамаке, читать книгу, периодически засыпать и просыпаться, провожать невероятной красоты закаты каждый вечер. После заката в лагере тоже есть чем заняться: они делают совместные анимации (как в детских лагерях, только с алкоголем) с музыкой, танцами и песнями. В кэмпинге есть комендантский час, с 00:00 до 06:00, в это время нельзя шуметь. Потому после 23:30 те, кто хотел продолжать тусить спускались в beach bar на пляж, либо шли спать.
Every day is kind of the same in Dreamsea, but in a good way: you have simple routines, relaxing with your body (well, if surfing can be called rest) and your soul, do not look at the phone (there is no WiFi in the camp, but for urgent matters there is a wifi spot in a cafe in 150 m). You live a simple vacation life, communicate with people of different ages and nationalities (Netherlands, Sweden, France, Germany, Spain, USA, Australia, Korea and counting…).I deliberately did not take my camera in order not to living my days by the ocean through the lens. I regretted my decision (of course) at the moment I saw those crazy landscapes and colors of the beach and the Dreamsea camp itself, but still, I am happy remembering this vacation with my eyes rather than with a flash card. Well, I am not completely honest here as I took my film camera with me, the photos from that roll illustrate this post.
В целом, неделя в Dreamsea похожа на день сурка, только в хорошем смысле: ты отдыхаешь и телом (ну если серфинг можно назвать отдыхом) и душой, не смотришь в телефон (в лагере нет WiFi, но есть срочно нужно, он есть в кафе на территории кэмпинга), просто ничего не делаешь, общаешься с ребятами разных возрастов и национальностей (с нами были Нидерланды, Швеция, Франция, Германия, Испания, США, Австралия, Корея...). Я, кстати, намеренно не взяла свою камеру, чтобы не смотреть на жизнь через объектив. Я, конечно, пожалела, когда увидела эти сумасшедшие пейзажи и краски пляжа и красивый дизайн территории лагеря, но все равно, я запоминала эту красоту скорее глазами, чем флэш-картой. Ну я еще я взяла с собой пленочную камеру с 36 кадрами, снимки с которой использую в этом посте.
To sum up, I have a positive impression of the camp. If I had to point out the cons: besides the 50m away toilets, the surfing conditions weren't the best (waves were pretty small during our whole stay). And last thing : sometimes I had the feeling that the managers and stuff pushed a little too hard everyone to participate in activities: maybe it's me such a sociopath, but I need more time to get used to new people and it’s easier for me not to be involved in any activities or contests. And I also need time for myself, alone with myself. But this points are so very individual and depend on a person! For guys who love to meet, and especially for those who travel alone or the company of girlfriends or friends, Dreamsea is definitely perfect destination!
Подводя итог, у меня осталось позитивное впечатление от лагеря. Из минусов я бы выделила (помимо туалета😅) отсутствие волн, но это скорее погода. Тем не менее, для более опытных серферов этот спот был бы разочарованием, если бы они приехали в нашу неделю. Ну и иногда у меня было ощущение, что организаторы немного слишком давят, чтобы все участвовали в мероприятиях: может это я такой социопат, но мне нужно время, чтобы привыкнуть к новым людям и мне проще быть, хотя бы первое время, в стороне. И плюс мне нужно время для себя, наедине с собой, я за этим приезжаю на отдых. Но этот пункт очень индивидуален! Для ребят, кто любит знакомиться, и особенно для тех, кто путешествует в одиночку или компанией подруг или друзей, Dreamsea - идеальное направление!
